Synopsis
Taming of the Fire (1972) is a sweeping historical drama about the birth of Soviet rocketry, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Daniil Khrabrovitsky built the film around chief designer Andrei Bashkirtsev — a character modeled on Sergei Korolev — played by Kirill Lavrov.
Through one man's life the story spans roughly half a century: from the makeshift rocket clubs of the 1920s and the prewar five-year plans to the spring night when a human being first leaves the planet behind. Bashkirtsev all but dissolves into his work, trading away his health, his family and his peace for blueprints destined to become launch pads. Around Lavrov stands a deep ensemble, including Ada Rogovtseva and Innokenty Smoktunovsky.
Running close to three hours, it's shot in the grand "production epic" style of its era — real test stands, engine firings, the hum of the design bureau. This one is for viewers who love slow, large-scale dramas about people consumed by a mission, not a quick evening watch. Stream Taming of the Fire (1972) online on iFILM.
