Synopsis
Calm (Zatishye, 1981) is a Soviet melodrama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Vitaly Chetverikov from Ivan Turgenev's novella. A young landowner named Astakhov rides out to inspect a neglected distant estate, and his arrival quietly upends the sleepy rhythm of country life.
The neighbors welcome him warmly. Two young women are coming of age in the house across the way, and Astakhov flirts the way idle men do — lightly, without weighing the cost. For those who stay behind once he leaves, that carelessness curdles into a private heartbreak no one in the provinces will name aloud. Turgenev's tension between feeling and propriety lives in the silences here.
Aristarkh Livanov, Viktor Tarasov and Olga Chipovskaya lead the cast, with a young Mikhail Boyarsky in an early role. Belarusfilm shot it slowly, true to the title, and it suits anyone who likes Russian literary classics without melodramatic noise. Stream Calm (1981) online on iFILM.
