Synopsis
Southern Chronicles (Pietinia Kronikas, 2025) is a Lithuanian comedy from director Ignas Miškinis that you can watch online on iFILM. It's the early 1990s, Lithuania has just regained its independence, and everything — money, rules, the future — is being rewritten on the fly.
Seventeen-year-old Rimants treats school as optional. His real life is rugby, the music on his cassette player, and small hustles on the chaotic open-air market where, back then, you could sell almost anything to almost anyone. Loud friends, risky deals, the endless search for where he fits — until he meets Monika. She comes from a comfortable family, she's beautiful and sure of herself, and she scrambles his whole scrappy little world; suddenly the swagger that always worked stops working. First love turns out to be a far riskier gamble than any of his street deals.
Adapted from Rimantas Kmita's beloved novel, written in the Šiauliai dialect — the author even turns up among the cast. It's a warm, wry coming-of-age story set on the seam between two eras, nostalgic for the '90s without the rose tint. It clicks for anyone who loves post-Soviet teenage tales and sees their own youth in them. Stream Southern Chronicles (2025) online on iFILM.
