11 Rebels

11 Rebels (十一人の賊軍, 2024) is a Japanese historical action epic you can watch online on iFILM. The Boshin War is raging. A handful of death-row prisoners from the Shibata clan's jail are handed a grim bargain: die on the execution block, or hold a border fortress against the advancing Imperial army.

Convicts, a samurai jailer and condemned men are forced to fight side by side for walls that were never theirs. Bigger powers play coldly with their fates — the Shibata clan, the dying Tokugawa shogunate, and the new Satsuma-Chōshū government army. Each of them suspects the promised pardon is a lie, and that the only real way out is one last stand. Takayuki Yamada and Taiga Nakano lead the cast, under director Kazuya Shiraishi.

The screenplay grew from an unrealized idea by Kazuo Kasahara, the writer behind the cult 1970s yakuza sagas, which lends it a grimy, merciless streak with no romance for the samurai code. Two and a half hours of tightening siege, mud, blood and betrayal stand in for noble duels.
