After a botched confrontation leaves Watson wounded, Holmes works out that the killer has slipped away to St Petersburg. He rents a room on Pekarskaya Street from Dr Kartsev and starts chasing the case in a city that has never heard of deduction — where his methods first read as pure eccentricity. The local police chief Znamensky gets in his way, while a Petersburg woman named Sophia becomes far more than a fellow investigator. Maxim Matveyev plays a harder, pricklier Holmes than the one on the page.

Directed by Nurbek Egen, the series drops Conan Doyle's canon into the dark, bloody setting of the imperial capital. The 18+ rating is earned — there's plenty of violence and grim atmosphere.
