Synopsis
Great Expectations (2023) is a BBC and FX drama series you can watch online on iFILM — a dark reimagining of Charles Dickens's novel, with Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham and Fionn Whitehead as Pip. An orphan from the marshes, Pip learns through a solicitor that a secret benefactor wants to make him a gentleman in London.
He arrives, reconnects with Miss Havisham, his childhood patron, and finds her comprehensively undone. Left at the altar as a young woman, she has not moved a clock since; the wedding dress is still on. Her ward Estella was raised — deliberately — to be beautiful and incapable of feeling. Pip cannot stop wanting her, which is the intended trap.
Director Lucy Forbes keeps the plot but drops the warmth. What results is less a heritage adaptation than a study of how damage compounds across a generation.
