Synopsis
The Hourglass Sanatorium (Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą, 1973) is Polish director Wojciech Has's surreal drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It blends fantasy and horror, adapted from the prose of Bruno Schulz.
Jozef travels to a crumbling sanatorium where his father lies dying. The director explains the catch: time runs differently inside these walls, so the old man is dead to the outside world but not here. From there the film becomes a drift through rooms that open onto whole worlds — childhood memories, dreams, nightmares, a carnival, the dead walking among the living. There's almost no straight plot, just a tide of images where past and present blur together.
Has didn't adapt a single story so much as the entire universe of Bruno Schulz, the writer killed in 1942. The result is baroque, overstuffed, dreamlike filmmaking that took the Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, with Jan Nowicki anchoring it as Jozef. The picture never explains itself; it rewards viewers willing to surrender to dream logic instead of hunting for a solution. A natural pick for anyone who loves the auteur surrealism of Parajanov or Fellini. Stream The Hourglass Sanatorium (1973) online on iFILM.
