Synopsis

James May: Our Man in Japan (2020), Season 1 is a travel documentary you can watch online on iFILM — six episodes following the former Top Gear host from the country's frozen north to its warm south.

He starts on Hokkaido with dog sleds, snowball fights and the comic ordeal of ordering noodles he can't read. Honshu and the Tohoku region bring mountain hikes, a naked hot-spring plunge with a wandering monk, and a brawl with giant robots. By Tokyo the cherry blossoms are out and a guide named Yujiro takes over, steering James toward the city's odder corners. Then ancient Kyoto, loud Osaka with its pachinko halls and sumo, and the semi-tropical islands of Shikoku and Kyushu.

Made by the team behind The Grand Tour, the show runs on slow curiosity rather than hype — May notices the things other presenters would drive straight past. Good for anyone who wants Japan beyond the postcard, seen through one polite, pedantic Englishman. Stream James May: Our Man in Japan Season 1 online on iFILM.
