Synopsis
Gorky 53 (2024) is a Soviet-era crime thriller you can watch online — the city of Gorky in the spring of 1953, just as a sweeping amnesty floods the streets with released convicts and fresh violence.
Ivan Astafyev, a former reconnaissance platoon commander, comes home after his own stint behind bars. Within days he is jumped by a street gang and then framed for the beating that follows. An old wartime friend, Captain Shvedov, pulls him out and lands him a job at the Dynamo athletic club, drilling young police officers in hand-to-hand combat. Peace doesn't last. After his brother and sister-in-law are murdered and suspicion falls on him again, the militia forces Ivan into a deal: go undercover inside the city's most dangerous gang and trap its boss, Khariton.
Directed by Sergey Korotaev, the show leans into the grim texture of a provincial town where a police badge and a prison tattoo can mean the same thing.
