Crime writer Manya Polivanova travels to the small town of Belovodsk, officially for research, really just for a change of air. She visits an old friend at his country estate. Two shots ring out and he goes down. Manya calls the police. No one else was in the house, so the local investigator reaches the obvious conclusion — and it points straight at her.
