Synopsis
Shtisel (שטיסל, 2013) is an Israeli drama series you can watch online on iFILM — three seasons that launched on cable channel Yes before Netflix carried the show to international audiences. Directed by Alon Zingman, the series is set entirely inside the ultra-Orthodox Haredi neighborhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem.
Akiva Shtisel (Michael Aloni) teaches at a yeshiva but would rather be painting; he is gentle, distracted, and not quite the obedient son his father expects. Shulem Shtisel (Dov Glickman), a widower and yeshiva principal, has plans for Akiva's marriage that don't include a young widow with a small child. But that is exactly who Akiva falls for — Elisheva (Hadas Yaron). The rest of the neighborhood fills out the frame: matchmakers, aunts with opinions, grandchildren, and Shira Haas in a recurring role years before Unorthodox made her name.
The series earns its reputation by refusing to treat the Haredi world as either a curiosity or a problem. The comedy and grief here feel entirely ordinary — and that ordinariness is exactly what keeps it compelling across three seasons. Stream Shtisel online on iFILM.
