Moscow, winter of 1962: a man in a technician's coveralls is making the rounds of apartment buildings, introducing himself as a gas service worker. His name is Vladimir Ionesyan — the first person in Soviet legal records to be formally classified as a serial killer.

The investigation is led by a team that has almost no precedent to draw from. Soviet criminology in the early 1960s had never defined this kind of predator, let alone developed methods to catch one. Andrei Smolyakov, Marina Aleksandrova and Maxim Matveyev anchor the cast as detectives piecing together a case the state barely knew how to name, in a city where trusting someone in a uniform was simply assumed.
