Synopsis
MotherFatherSon (2019) is a BBC Two drama you can watch online on iFILM — starring Richard Gere in his first major British TV role. Directed by Charles Sturridge and James Kent, it centres on an American media magnate whose family unravels in full view of the political world he shaped.
Max (Gere) built his London media empire by controlling what people know — and therefore what they do. His son Caden (Billy Howle), thirty and disintegrating, has become the one thing Max cannot manage: a liability. When Caden's self-destruction reaches a crisis point, his estranged mother Katrine (Helen McCrory) re-enters the picture. She and Max carry decades of mutual damage. Their quiet war over Caden plays out against editorial rooms, political pressure, and the mechanisms by which a newspaper group shapes a country.
The tagline nails the scope: "Every family has its secrets. This one has the secrets of the nation." Eight episodes, no easy villains. McCrory in particular brings a steel-and-sorrow combination that gives the series its best scenes. A slow, precise drama for viewers who want their political thrillers to hurt on a personal level as well. Stream MotherFatherSon online on iFILM.
