Synopsis
Isayev (2009) is a Russian period spy series you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sergey Ursuliak. It follows Maxim Isayev through his earliest intelligence assignments in the 1920s — the young officer who will eventually become Stirlitz, the legendary Soviet spy at the centre of Seventeen Moments of Spring.
His first posting sends him to Tallinn to intercept a smuggling operation bleeding valuables out of the state treasury. Back in the Soviet Union, he is dispatched to Vladivostok to map the movements of White Army forces. Then abroad — émigré circles, counterrevolutionary networks, undercover in a world of people plotting their way back. Every mission ends just as the next one begins. Daniil Strakhov plays Isayev, alongside Sergey Makoveytsky, Mikhail Porechenkov, and Yuri Solomin.
Ursuliak built the series as a standalone espionage drama that also works as an origin story for one of Soviet cinema's most iconic characters. Fans of Seventeen Moments of Spring get to see the man at the very start; everyone else gets a sharp spy thriller set against the upheaval of post-revolutionary Russia.
