Synopsis
Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (2017) is an Indonesian feminist western you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Mouly Surya, starring Marsha Timothy.
On the island of Sumba, Marlina is a widow with debts, livestock, and no one to call. Seven armed men ride up, led by Markus (Egy Fedly): they want the cattle, the money, and Marlina herself. She feeds them dinner with poison in it, then picks up a machete. Some die on the spot. She takes Markus's severed head and starts walking to the nearest police station across the arid savannahs of East Nusa Tenggara, picking up a pregnant companion named Novi (Dea Panendra) along the way.
Shot on location across Sumba's sparse, wide-open terrain — landscape that echoes spaghetti westerns while staying rooted in Indonesian rural women's vulnerability — the film unfolds in four titled chapters. Marsha Timothy claimed Best Actress at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. A co-production between Indonesia, France, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Thailand, it screened at Cannes' ACID section in 2017.
