Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno (2007) is a Russian historical drama series you can watch online on iFILM. Pavel Derevyanko plays the legendary anarchist commander from youth to exile: at seventeen, a peasant boy from the village of Hulyaipole is handed a twenty-year sentence for his part in armed robberies. The February Revolution of 1917 opened the prison gates, and Makhno walked out carrying two decades of rage and a clear idea of what he wanted — land for the peasants, free from landlords and commissars alike.

The civil war that tore Ukraine apart gave him a stage big enough for all of it. Germans, Petliurists, White Guards, Red Army — his partisan force, the Makhnovshchina, fought them all in shifting combinations, sometimes on the same week. Alliances flipped faster than maps could track. Alongside Derevyanko, Ada Rogoztseva and Igor Gnezdilov anchor the drama's quieter, more personal threads.

Director Nikolay Kaptan keeps the focus on character over spectacle. What the series gets right is refusing to flatten Makhno into either a folk hero or a bandit — Derevyanko plays him as angry, quick-witted, loyal to almost no one, and that makes the final choice the war forces on him land with real weight.
