Synopsis

Tom Spellacy catches a murder case: a young woman's body, bisected, dumped near the highway. The trail leads through the kind of money that buys civic respectability — construction contracts, charity galas, the sort of donations a bishop doesn't turn down. His brother Desmond has built his career on relationships with exactly those donors. The investigation doesn't pull them together. It pulls the ground out from under both of them.
The film is adapted from the novel by John Gregory Dunne, who wrote the screenplay alongside Joan Didion. At 108 minutes, it's a measured thriller — two actors holding an entire scene together on pauses and averted eyes, with Charles Durning and Burgess Meredith in sharp supporting turns.
