Synopsis
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009) is Werner Herzog's crime drama, available to watch online on iFILM, with Nicolas Cage as a detective unraveling a murder case and himself at the same time.
Terrence McDonagh earns a medal and a promotion after saving a prisoner from drowning during Hurricane Katrina. The bad back he wrecks doing it leaves him hooked on painkillers, and from there it slides into cocaine, betting slips and debts he can't cover. Handed the killing of a family of Senegalese immigrants, the lieutenant lurches between witnesses, dealers and his own hallucinations, gun shoved in his waistband, the law more a suggestion than a job. Eva Mendes plays his girlfriend; Val Kilmer is the partner happy to look the other way.
Herzog claimed he never watched Abel Ferrara's earlier film of the same name, and this isn't a remake but a separate fever dream, complete with iguanas in frame and a crooked grin where a moral should be.
