Synopsis
The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress' Treasure (2026) is out now to watch online — a theatrical anime mystery that pushes the palace-set franchise onto the open sea for the first time. Director Norihiro Naganuma trades corridors for coastline.
Maomao, the palace's resident apothecary, and the eunuch Jinshi sail off to return a concubine's ashes to her hometown. She died in the harem five years back, and something about it never sat right. Pirates, a buried treasure and a boy who knows more than he's letting on complicate the trip. Even the empress's own remains hide a secret nobody at court expected.
The franchise is built on the light novel Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, where symptoms and poisons double as clues in a costume drama dressed up as detective fiction. Aoi Yūki reprises Maomao's voice from the TV series, so this plays as canon, not some side story.
