Synopsis
Elling (2001) is a Norwegian comedy-drama directed by Petter Næss — watch it online on iFILM. Per Christian Ellefsen plays Elling, a sheltered, poetry-obsessed 40-year-old who spent his whole life with his mother. When she dies, he ends up in a state institution, where he is paired with Kjell Bjarne (Sven Nordin) — a gentle, lonely man with a fixation on women neither of them has ever spoken to.
The state releases them together into an Oslo apartment with a stipend and a social worker. That's the whole setup. Getting groceries is a crisis. A phone call requires preparation. But slowly, through small victories and larger embarrassments, both men start building something that resembles a life outside.
The film was submitted as Norway's entry for the Academy Awards and picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. What makes it work is the restraint — it never pushes the warmth too hard, never turns disability into inspiration fodder. Stream Elling (2001) online on iFILM.
