Synopsis
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) is Tony Richardson's stark British drama, free to watch online on iFILM. Colin Smith, a working-class lad with a chip on his shoulder, is sent to a borstal reformatory after robbing a bakery.
Inside, the staff spot his one gift: nobody runs distance like he does. The Governor sees a trophy in the making and grants him privileges — solo runs beyond the gates, softer treatment, talk of a bright future — if he'll win the big race against a rival school. But out on those lonely training runs, Colin turns things over: his dead father, his mother blowing the insurance payout, a class system that never dealt him a fair hand. Tom Courtenay, in his first lead, plays that quiet fury almost wordlessly.
It's a cornerstone of the British New Wave and the 'angry young men' movement, adapted by Alan Sillitoe from his own short story. The closing act on the finish line remains one of the boldest gestures of defiance in English cinema. Stream The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner online on iFILM.
