About

Synopsis

The Shining (1997) is an American TV miniseries you can watch online on iFILM — Stephen King's own screenplay adaptation of his novel, directed by Mick Garris. Jack Torrance, played by Steven Weber, takes a winter caretaker job at the remote Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies, hoping the isolation will help him write. It does not help him write.

King wrote the script specifically to course-correct what he felt Stanley Kubrick's film got wrong: Jack in the novel was a man who came apart slowly, not someone already unhinged in the opening scene. Weber plays that deterioration carefully, letting the hotel's pressure find the cracks that were already there. Rebecca De Mornay's Wendy is far from the passive figure of the 1980 film — she fights. Young Courtland Mead carries much of the supernatural weight as Danny, whose gift for seeing what the Overlook hides makes him both the most vulnerable and the most knowing person in the building.

At three episodes and roughly six hours, this was an ambitious television project for 1997, and it gave King the adaptation he had long wanted. Stream The Shining miniseries (1997) on iFILM.
