Synopsis
An Awfully Big Adventure (1995) — watch online on iFILM — is a British drama directed by Mike Newell, adapted from Beryl Bainbridge's 1989 novel. Liverpool, winter of 1947: a rundown rep company is staging Peter Pan, and seventeen-year-old Stella walks in off the street looking for a way into the theatre.
She gets a job as a runner and fixates on the director — Hugh Grant, all surface charm and zero warmth — while the troupe's visiting lead actor, P. L. O'Hara, played by Alan Rickman, drifts through the production in a way that slowly becomes the most important thing happening. What starts as a story about backstage infatuation turns considerably darker by the end. The film is at its best when it refuses to explain itself.
