Synopsis
Persuasion (1995) is a Jane Austen adaptation worth watching online for its hushed, almost wordless performances. Roger Michell directs this drama set in England during the Napoleonic wars, stripping the costume genre of its usual gloss.
Years ago, Anne Elliot was talked out of marrying a naval officer with no fortune — the match looked beneath her. Eight years on, her family's money has drained away, while Frederick Wentworth has come back from sea a captain, wealthy and very much sought after. Amanda Root lets Anne speak through silence, mostly in glances; Ciarán Hinds plays Wentworth as a man nursing an old wound who can't quite take the first step. Between them sit pride, lost time and other people's expectations.
The film moves softly, in half-tones — no big scenes, barely any score, just looks across a crowded room and everything left unsaid. If you favour Austen on screen and lean toward Emma or Sense and Sensibility over louder period pieces, this one matches the mood exactly. Stream Persuasion (1995) online on iFILM.
