Synopsis
Two long-divorced actors are forced back onto the same stage in Kiss Me Kate (1953), the Cole Porter musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. The show they're mounting is a musical of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew — and, naturally, the feuding couple they play looks an awful lot like the couple they used to be.
Fred Graham promised the lead to his new flame Lois, but the part was written for his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, so the backstage war mirrors the one on stage. Throw in two singing gangsters who turn up to collect a debt by mistake and end up stuck at the theater until curtain. George Sidney directs, with Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel trading barbs in song, the dazzling Ann Miller tapping up a storm, and a young Bob Fosse whose choreography already steals scenes.
It was shot in 3D at the height of Hollywood's depth craze, so props keep flying straight at the audience. A glossy MGM musical for anyone who loves their romance loud, danced and razor-witted. Stream Kiss Me Kate (1953) online on iFILM.
