Synopsis

The Simpsons (1989), Season 1 — watch online on iFILM: thirteen episodes that aired on FOX from December 1989 through May 1990, and redefined what primetime animation was allowed to be. Matt Groening, James Brooks, and Sam Simon built Springfield from scratch and handed it to Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

The season runs as standalone stories, each finding a different angle on the same household. Homer loses his Christmas bonus, moonlights as a department-store Santa, and brings home a greyhound nobody asked for. Bart fakes an IQ test and spends a week at a school for the gifted. Homer gets fired from the nuclear plant and reinvents himself as a safety activist. Lisa hits a blues-flavored second-grade crisis. Marge nearly starts something with a bowling instructor named Jacques. The show earns the laughs through character, not just absurdity — which is rarer than it sounds.

Season 1 won an Emmy and established the template that every animated family sitcom since has either copied or argued with. Stream The Simpsons Season 1 online on iFILM.
