Against All Odds

Against All Odds (1984) is a neo-noir thriller directed by Taylor Hackford that you can watch online on iFILM. Terry Brogan — played by Jeff Bridges — has just been cut from his Los Angeles football team. No job, no savings. Nightclub owner Jake Wise, a man with connections in uncomfortable places, offers him a simple task: go to Mexico, find Jessie, and bring her back. Wise says she ran off with his money. He doesn't mention she might have had her reasons.

Terry finds her. He also falls for her, which turns a clean errand into a tangle of loyalty, money and someone else's game. Rachel Ward plays Jessie without the usual femme-fatale shorthand — she has motives that hold up — and James Woods makes Wise the kind of threat that feels most dangerous when he's being reasonable. The film is a loose remake of the 1947 noir Out of the Past, updated to 1980s Los Angeles with the moral ambiguity intact.
