Synopsis
Alex & Emma (2003) is a romantic comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Luke Wilson and Kate Hudson. The setup is a classic pressure cooker: writer Alex Sheldon owes two hundred thousand dollars to the Cuban mob and has thirty days to finish a novel — or else.
The novel exists as one sentence. His solution: hire stenographer Emma Dinsmore to transcribe as he dictates. Emma turns out to be far more than a typist — she critiques the story, challenges the characters, and slowly realizes that the romantic hero in Alex's book is a thin self-portrait, while the love interest keeps changing her name and accent every time Alex glances over at the woman taking his dictation. Sophie Marceau plays the fictional Polina.
Kate Hudson carries the film by playing both Emma and every version of the fictional heroine, switching accents and personalities mid-scene. It's a small, self-aware film — not particularly deep, but warmer than most of its genre contemporaries. Stream Alex & Emma online on iFILM.
