Sam Nelson — corporate negotiator, not law enforcement — is on board for personal reasons and becomes the only person trying to talk through the crisis rather than force it. On the ground, a UK counterterrorism committee works out whether to scramble fighter jets and, if so, at what cost. Passenger tension builds in layers. When the demands finally come in, they shift the shape of everything the authorities thought they understood.
