Synopsis
Irreplaceable You (2018) is a bittersweet drama-comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Stephanie Laing. Abbie and Sam have been inseparable since they were eight. Then a cancer diagnosis rewrites everything.
Instead of falling apart, Abbie makes a plan. Sam is hopeless on his own — clueless about dating, allergic to change — so she sets out to find his next girlfriend herself, vetting candidates through awkward coffee meetings before she runs out of time. Gugu Mbatha-Raw gives Abbie a dry, stubborn wit; Michiel Huisman plays Sam as a man quietly refusing to understand what's coming. A support group full of fellow patients ends up teaching her how to actually live the days she has left.
Steve Coogan, Christopher Walken and Kate McKinnon turn up in supporting roles, an unusually heavyweight bench for such a small, intimate film. It skips the easy tearjerker beats and lands somewhere more honest: how do you let go of someone without letting go of yourself? One for viewers who like their sad stories laced with humor.
