Synopsis
The Other Side of the Wind (2018) is Orson Welles' final film — watch it online on iFILM. He shot it between 1970 and 1976, never finished it, and the reels spent decades in a European vault tied up in legal battles. Netflix eventually cleared the rights and brought editor Bob Murawski in to cut a release version from Welles' own notes and storyboards.
The story centres on Jake Hannaford, a legendary old-school Hollywood director throwing himself a 70th birthday party while screening footage from his edgy, unfinished new project. John Huston plays him with a particular kind of exhausted menace. Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper and Susan Strasberg fill the party around him as journalists, hangers-on and rivals. Welles shot the whole thing in a fractured, multi-camera mock-documentary style that feels rawer than anything else in his body of work.
It is unmistakably about Welles himself — the exile, the stalled projects, the genius running out of time and money. Forty years between shooting and release, and the film still crackles. Stream The Other Side of the Wind (2018) online on iFILM.
