Calls (Season 1)

Calls (2021) is a French-American anthology series you can watch online on iFILM, created and directed by Fede Álvarez. The format is stripped to almost nothing: a dark screen, audio waveforms, and voices — no faces, no locations, no cut-aways.

Strangers connected by phone calls start noticing tears in the logic of their lives — each conversation a fragment of something much larger building toward an unnamed catastrophe. The cast is almost absurdly stacked for a show with no images: Pedro Pascal, Lily Collins, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Rosario Dawson, Aubrey Plaza and roughly a dozen more, all heard and never seen.

Álvarez, who made his name with visceral horror visuals, bets here on the inverse — that silence and sound design can do what jump cuts cannot. It pays off.
