Synopsis
The Immortal Story (1968) is an Orson Welles drama you can watch online on iFILM. An aging merchant in Macau is haunted by an old sailors' yarn: the one about a rich man who paid a young sailor to father his heir with the man's own wife. Every port tells it. So the old man decides to make the tale come true for real.
Welles himself plays the merchant, Mr. Clay; Jeanne Moreau is the woman hired for a single night, and Fernando Rey turns up in a brief role. It runs barely an hour, adapted from a novella by Karen Blixen, the same author who wrote Out of Africa. This was Welles' first film shot in color, and you can feel him lingering on candlelight, heavy velvet, and Moreau's face in close-up.
A small, chamber-sized parable about what happens when a man tries to stage real life from someone else's script. One for cinephiles who care about late Welles and unhurried European cinema of the late sixties. Stream The Immortal Story (1968) online on iFILM.
