Synopsis
Othello (1951) is Orson Welles' Cannes Palme d'Or-winning adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy — watch online on iFILM. Welles directed himself in the title role, co-producing across France, Italy and the United States over four years of interrupted, cash-strapped filming that nearly killed the project several times.
The film opens at the end: the funeral procession of Othello and Desdemona, crowds wailing, bodies borne aloft. Only then does it cut back to Iago's scheming. That structural inversion is the key. Irish stage actor Micheál Mac Liammóir plays Iago with a chilling, almost bureaucratic precision — and Welles builds the jealousy not in dialogue rooms but across fortress ramparts, marble staircases and Moroccan sea cliffs. The architecture replaces stage scenery entirely.
Taking the top prize at Cannes in 1952, the film remains one of the few Shakespeare adaptations where the director's personality rivals the source material. Stream Othello (1951) online on iFILM.
