Synopsis
The Sea Hawk (1940) is a swashbuckling adventure from director Michael Curtiz, free to watch online on iFILM. Privateer Geoffrey Thorpe raids Spanish treasure ships for Queen Elizabeth I, and when he captures the noble Doña María, the enemy becomes the woman he can't stop thinking about.
Errol Flynn is at the top of his game here — fencing, defying the crown's cautious ministers, leading a doomed gold raid through the jungles of Panama, then chained to a Spanish galley. Brenda Marshall plays María, torn between her country and the corsair who took her prisoner. Claude Rains schemes as the Spanish ambassador, and Flora Robson makes a steely, watchful Elizabeth.
Shot on the Warner Bros. lot with a sweeping Erich Wolfgang Korngold score, the film closes on a sword duel that fight choreographers still study. This is the pirate picture before the genre learned to wink at itself — pure, earnest, beautifully staged. Stream The Sea Hawk (1940) online on iFILM.
