Twixt

Twixt (2011) is Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed horror oddity — watch it online on iFILM. Val Kilmer plays Hall Baltimore, a horror novelist in freefall: bad sales, a dead creative streak, and now a stopover in a decaying small town that happens to be sitting on a string of unexplained deaths. Every night he dreams of a blood-soaked girl named V, played by a quietly unsettling Elle Fanning, who pulls him deeper into a mystery that may or may not exist.

Tom Waits narrates as a spectral Edgar Allan Poe — his voice alone worth the runtime. Bruce Dern plays the local sheriff, a true believer in Hall's fictional instincts. Coppola plays the whole film on the knife's edge between nightmare and waking life: a clock tower with twelve faces each showing a different time, a town that looks permanently half-built, dialogue that drifts like smoke.
