Synopsis
Henry & June (1990) is Philip Kaufman's erotic biographical drama — watch it online on iFILM. Paris, early 1930s: writer Henry Miller (Fred Ward) and his volatile wife June (Uma Thurman) collide with Anaïs Nin (Maria de Medeiros), a French-Cuban diarist recording every feeling, desire and doubt in obsessive detail.
What unfolds is a shifting triangle. Nin falls for June, then for Henry, then watches the two of them devour each other while she keeps writing. The film draws directly from Nin's published diaries, and Kaufman stages the Montparnasse world with enough period texture — cramped studios, late-night café arguments, borrowed money — that it never plays like a costume fantasy. In American theatres it became the first film to receive the newly created NC-17 rating.
The intimate scenes here carry dramatic weight because Kaufman is genuinely interested in how Nin's erotic life fed her writing — not the other way around. Fred Ward is a revelation as Miller: loud, selfish and oddly magnetic. Stream Henry & June (1990) online on iFILM.
