Synopsis
Crimes of the Future (1970) is an early David Cronenberg sci-fi oddity you can watch online on iFILM. The Canadian director shot it in 63 minutes, almost wordless, carried by a single narrating voice. The setup is bleak: a plague tied to cosmetics has wiped out sexually mature women.
Adrian Tripod runs a dermatology clinic called the House of Skin. His mentor Antoine Rouge has vanished, so Tripod drifts through empty modernist spaces, watching men whose bodies refuse to behave. There is barely a plot in the usual sense. Cronenberg leans on chilly atmosphere and body horror instead, and the obsessions that define his later work are already here.
Fair warning: it is slow, dry and closer to an art experiment than a genre film. But you can trace a straight line from this to Videodrome and The Fly. Stream Crimes of the Future (1970) online on iFILM.
