Synopsis
The Vampire Lovers (1970) is a Hammer horror you can watch online as a genuine landmark in the genre — both for what it showed on screen and for where it came from. Director Roy Ward Baker adapted Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 novella Carmilla, a vampire story that predates Dracula by twenty-five years and has a very different kind of predator at its centre.
Set in 19th-century Styria, the film follows Mircalla Karnstein, who moves through the local aristocracy under borrowed names, leaving behind a trail of young women drained of blood and will. Baron Hartog knows the Karnstein line is to blame — he staked the others — but Mircalla's tomb has eluded him. Polish actress Ingrid Pitt owns the screen in the role, and Peter Cushing brings his usual precise gravity to the general who finally connects the deaths.
Hammer deliberately pushed the sensuality further than they had before. By current standards it's a restrained, visually elegant Gothic piece — candlelit interiors, fog-heavy grounds, Cushing doing more with a pause than most actors manage with a speech.
