Synopsis
On the Beach (2000) is a post-nuclear drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Russell Mulcahy. It's a new adaptation of Nevil Shute's 1957 novel — previously filmed by Stanley Kramer in 1959 with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner — updated to a near-future 2006, when a missile exchange between the great powers ends the world in a matter of days.
One American submarine survives. Captain Dwight Towers (Armand Assante) brings the USS Charleston into Melbourne harbour as the radiation cloud drifts south toward Australia. A faint radio signal from Alaska gives Towers a reason to sail: if someone is still broadcasting there, the survival picture changes. He takes scientist Julian Osborne aboard and heads north. Back in Melbourne, Rachel Ward and Bryan Brown play people working out what living to the end actually means. At nearly three and a half hours, the film earns its runtime — quiet, unhurried, and genuinely heavy. Watch On the Beach (2000) online on iFILM.
