Synopsis
George Washington (2000) is David Gordon Green's first feature, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A slow Southern summer, a handful of kids drifting through a half-empty town, and one accident that splits their childhood in two.
The children spend their days near rusted trains and a shuttered amusement park. One boy has to keep his head dry and wears a helmet to protect a soft skull. During an ordinary game something goes terribly wrong, and the group is left holding a secret too heavy for them to carry. A girl named Nasia narrates, and the story comes together less from plot than from glances, pauses and things left unsaid. The young cast — Donald Holden, Candace Evanofski, Curtis Cotton III — were mostly first-time performers.
Green shot the film for almost nothing, while cinematographer Tim Orr built widescreen images that drew comparisons to Terrence Malick. It picked up critics' prizes and still ranks among the great American debuts. If you lean toward quiet, unhurried films about growing up, this one stays with you.
