Synopsis
Shirley (2020) is Josephine Decker's unsettling psychological drama — watch online on iFILM if you want a thriller that works entirely through atmosphere and dread rather than plot mechanics. Elizabeth Moss plays the real-life gothic fiction writer Shirley Jackson, brilliant and corrosive in equal measure, living in a New England house that feels like one of her own stories. When a young couple, Fred and Rose, move in with Shirley and her academic husband Stanley (Michael Stuhlbarg), what looks like hospitality quickly becomes something closer to an experiment.
Shirley homes in on Rose (Odessa Young) — drawing out her anxieties, her desires, her shape — and slowly the line between Shirley's new novel and the life unfolding around her dissolves. Logan Lerman plays Fred, who doesn't quite understand why his wife is changing. Decker shoots in a queasy, impressionistic style that mirrors how Shirley herself sees the world: everything is raw material, nothing is safe.
The film is less interested in biography than in how creative obsession can consume the people close to it. Moss is the reason to watch — she makes Jackson both terrifying and genuinely sad. Stream Shirley online on iFILM.
