Synopsis
"Triumph of the Spirit" (1989) is a war drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Robert M. Young and filmed on the actual grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau — the first feature production to receive that permission. Willem Dafoe plays Salamo Arouch, a professional boxer from Thessaloniki arrested with his family and brought to the camp in 1943.
To stay alive, Arouch has to keep fighting: bare-knuckle bouts staged for SS guards, his family's survival riding on the result of each one. He went nearly two years that way — somewhere close to two hundred rounds with no one in his corner. Edward James Olmos and Robert Loggia round out the cast, but the film's weight is entirely Dafoe's to carry. The location shooting gives it a gravity no studio backlot could fake.
