Synopsis
The Champion of Auschwitz (Mistrz, 2021) is a Polish war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Maciej Barczewski built the film around the true story of Tadeusz "Teddy" Pietrzykowski, a lightweight boxing champion from Warsaw who arrived on the first prisoner transport to Auschwitz in 1940.
Camp officers put him in the ring almost immediately. Boxing was sport for the guards and a death sentence for whoever lost. Teddy kept winning. Each bout chipped away at the idea that the system was absolute, giving fellow prisoners something the camp was designed to eliminate. Piotr Głowacki carries the role without a single moment of movie-star heroics.
What makes this film harder to shake than most Holocaust dramas is its refusal to soften the physical reality — the hunger, the cold, the bodies.
