An old shepherd from Mesopotamia leaves home, kin and comfort behind because of a voice no one else could hear. Decades follow: lean years in Canaan, time at the Egyptian court, a war with local kings, and still no heir. Sarah remains barren while a promise made by God hangs unanswered.

At 175 minutes the film runs longer than most theatrical epics of its era — and earns it by building toward the hardest passage in the story, the near-sacrifice of Isaac, without rushing or softening what that moment costs.
