White Lightning

Gator is convinced a crooked county sheriff, played by Ned Beatty, drowned his younger brother, a civil-rights organizer. Posing as an informant, he rolls into the swampy backroads of Arkansas, climbs behind the wheel of a souped-up car and bulldozes his way toward the man who did it. Director Joseph Sargent leans on heat, mud and real automotive chases instead of process shots. Reynolds plays a charming brute here, and the part locked in his good-ol'-boy persona for the rest of the decade. Rough, fast filmmaking for fans of seventies drive-in action.
