Synopsis
One Wonderful Sunday (1947) is an early Akira Kurosawa drama you can watch online on iFILM. It follows two young lovers through a single day off in bombed-out postwar Tokyo, with just thirty-five yen between them.
Yuzo and Masako meet up once a week, on Sunday. They have no money, no home of their own, and a city full of rubble, jobless men, and ticket scalpers working against them. Still, they try to turn the day into something to remember: they wander through a half-built house, daydream about opening a coffee shop, and chase a concert they can barely afford. Isao Numasaki and Chieko Nakakita let the poverty show in small gestures while the hope lives in how they lean on each other.
This is Kurosawa before the samurai films and the global fame — an intimate, almost neorealist story about people who have nothing to offer but their belief in tomorrow. The closing scene in an empty park, where Masako turns and speaks straight to the audience, still divides viewers and still lands.
