Synopsis
The Comfort of Strangers (1990) is Paul Schrader's psychological thriller, and you can watch online on iFILM. English couple Mary and Colin arrive in Venice hoping to thaw a relationship that has gone cold. They wander the maze of alleys, get lost, bicker over nothing — and one night, hungry and turned around, they accept the help of a smooth, talkative stranger.
His name is Robert. He buys them wine, tells unsettling stories about his late father, walks them back to his palazzo and introduces his quiet wife, Caroline. From that dinner on, the pair can't quite pull free of their new acquaintances. Hospitality curdles into obsession, and the courtesy turns out to be a trap that was laid long before Mary and Colin ever set foot on the canal.
Playwright Harold Pinter wrote the screenplay from Ian McEwan's novel, which is why menace seeps through the most polite lines and the silences sit heavy. Christopher Walken plays Robert on a knife-edge between charm and nightmare, Helen Mirren is his broken wife, and Rupert Everett and Natasha Richardson are the doomed guests. Slow, gorgeous and genuinely cruel — for viewers who like dread that creeps rather than pounces. Stream The Comfort of Strangers (1990) online on iFILM.
