Hardcore

Hardcore (1979) is Paul Schrader's unsparing American thriller — watch it online on iFILM. George C. Scott plays Jake Van Dorn, a devout Calvinist businessman from Grand Rapids, Michigan, whose teenage daughter vanishes during a church youth trip to California.

The police turn up nothing. A private investigator does — he brings Jake a reel of amateur pornography, and Jake recognizes his daughter's face on it. What follows is a one-man search through the LA underworld: peep shows, strip clubs, backroom film productions, and the entire economy that runs beneath them. His only real guide is Niki, a young sex worker played by Season Hubley, who agrees to help him navigate a world he's spent his life pretending doesn't exist.

Schrader, who wrote Taxi Driver, is working similar ground here — a man whose rigid moral framework collides with an America he can't control or explain away. Scott plays it almost entirely without volume; the horror is in how still he goes. Stream Hardcore online on iFILM.
