Synopsis
Waiting to Exhale (1995) is a romantic drama-comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Forest Whitaker from Terry McMillan's bestselling novel. Four Black women in Phoenix — Savannah, Bernadine, Gloria, and Robin — share the kind of friendship where nothing goes unsaid, and each is navigating a different version of the same dead-end situation with men.
Bernadine's husband leaves her for another woman after she spent years propping up his career; her response involves a driveway, a BMW, and a lighter. Savannah follows a man across the country only to find he has no intention of leaving his wife. Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon each carry a full arc — none of it feels rushed, and none of it tips into caricature. The accompanying soundtrack, featuring Houston, Toni Braxton, and Mary J. Blige, sold over seven million copies.
The film arrived at a moment when mainstream Hollywood rarely made pictures like this — wide release, substantial budget, four women at the center, no rescue subplot. It landed accordingly, grossing over $67 million against a $16 million budget. That audience recognition still holds up. Stream Waiting to Exhale (1995) online on iFILM.
